Community Outreach and Support
Community Outreach and Support
Through a number of community outreach initiatives, The Johnson Center supports and informs the community regarding many aspects of developmental disorders, chronic health issues, and nutrition.
Food for Thought Program
Through the Food for Thought Program, The Johnson Center focuses on food recovery that provides nutritious meals for children, families, and adults with high needs in Central Texas, helping to ensure access to healthy food for all. As a Nourishing our Neighborhood grant recipient from Whole Foods Market (link: https://media.wholefoodsmarket.com/community-giving/nourishing-our-neighborhoods/), The Johnson Center staff and volunteers recover thousands of pounds of healthy food per year and redistribute it to feed our community fresh, high-quality food.

Events
Past events have included:
GrapeUp! Come Together - fully inclusive, summer family fun series.
Back to School Bash – a fun, frolicking way to beat the heat and gear up for school. Past events included a drum circle, kids’ band, bounce house, rock star photo booth, bubble machines, ring toss games, arts and crafts, and more.
Halloween Hoot – children are invited to practice their trick-or-treating at our offices and join us for some fun and games. Paint-the-pumpkin, a cupcake walk, costume contests, arts and crafts, and ‘spooky’ sensory activities are some of the entertainments.
Holiday Celebration – Santa Claus joins us so that families have a no-stress opportunity to get a treasured photo of their child with the jolly man himself. Fun holiday games and treats are always a part of this great tradition.
Valentine’s Day Party – Cupid fires his bow, and our office is the site for a fun-filled Valentine’s celebration. Delicious snacks, arts and crafts, and special valentines make this a great way to celebrate.
Drum Circles - These events are a fun way to encourage children’s creativity in a group setting, and provide an opportunity for social interaction in a relaxed environment. Our drum circles are led by a music therapist with extensive experience in working with people with special needs.
Sibling Camps – These camps are designed to support and inform sibling’s experiences, with a focus on high needs families and building strong relationships and communication skills.
