Spotlight on Dr. Claire Schutte
JCCHD | Fri, August 16, 2013 | [Staff Spotlight]Dr. Claire Schutte, Psy.D, BCBA-D, has been the staff psychologist at The Johnson Center since 2010. Born in Washington D.C., Dr. Schutte grew up in Winter Park, Florida and went to college at The University of Florida. She then completed her doctorate in Clinical Psychology and her Master’s Degree in Applied Behavioral Analysis at Florida Tech.
While in graduate school, Dr. Schutte became interested in psychological assessment, as well as working with individuals with autism spectrum disorders. For her doctorate degree, she completed a one-year internship that brought her to Austin, Texas.
Dr. Schutte interned at The Texas State University Counseling Center, where she provided counseling services for students. She also focused on support services for college students with Asperger’s Syndrome and autism, including leading a support group and educating faculty on the unique needs of these students.
Once Dr. Schutte moved to Austin, she knew she didn’t want to leave, and has been here ever since. She has found that working at The Johnson Center is the perfect fit for her interest in assessment and helping those with autism (Dr. Schutte’s primary role at The Johnson Center is to provide assessment services). Many of the patients she sees are undergoing initial diagnostic evaluation for autism, though she sees people of all ages for additional assessment services, such as re-evaluations and assessment of specific skills. Dr. Schutte also enjoys contributing to outreach, sibling support, and research at The Johnson Center. She enjoys meeting and getting to play with all of the children who come into the office, and finds it very rewarding to empower parents with tools for moving forward after an evaluation. Dr. Schutte also enjoys being part of a multi-disciplinary team. She hopes to continue helping more families affected by autism.
Some of Dr. Schutte’s favorite memories have been created at The Johnson Center holiday parties, particularly the annual Halloween party. She enjoys seeing both the kids and staff members have fun and dress up in fantastic costumes each year.
In her free time, Dr. Schutte can be found exploring Austin. She is a big fan of outdoor activities, trying new restaurants, traveling, cooking, and jewelry making.
